The sex of a bird cannot be determined using external characteristics. A DNA test from an expert DNA lab is the only accurate way to determine the difference between males and females. The sex of birds is determined by the inheritance of sex chromosomes.

Females have the heterogametic sex chromosomes ZW, whereas males have the homogametic ZZ. This sex-determining system is highly conserved in avians, which include nearly ten thousand species.

Sex determination occurs at fertilization with the inheritance of the sex chromosomes Accredilab's experienced technicians have perfected the science of using DNA to determine a bird's sex. We can test every variety of bird species including finches, cockatoos, parrots, lorikeets, raptors and many more.

We will determine the sex of your bird using feathers, two or three drops of blood or eggshells from newly hatched birds. These methods are painless and do not harm the bird in any way.

We will email a certificate showing the bird’s ID information and gender within 3 business days of receipt of the samples. (See sample certificate)

DNA - Feather Collection Instructions

DNA - Blood Collection Instructions

Some easy guidelines

The best choice if possible is to clip the bird’s nail just enough to nick the vein and spot a drop of blood on the blood card we have supplied, or the card form printed off your computer.

The second choice is to collect chest feathers by using tweezers and grabbing the feather at the base and then plucking. Plucked feathers from the chest must have a follicle attached at the end. This follicle contains the DNA for testing.
Other feathers are not likely to contain sufficient DNA.

You can easily self-collect the blood and feathers by following our simple instructions.
You can print out all the blood cards you need directly from your computer, all that is needed for feather samples are separate envelopes, and by self-collection you save a lot of time. We are always available to guide you if there are any questions, just call us toll-free at 1-877-842-4827
